Safety Boat Duty / Rib refresher training for Drivers and Crews
Castle Cove’s racing relies on Safety Boat drivers and crew to keep our members safe in sometimes challenging conditions. Given last year’s short season and the lengthy lay-off due to the Pandemic (and if my own sailing skills are an indicator) many of our various skills are rusty. Therefore, we (the training team) have put together a programme of Safety Boat activities to refresh our skills so we can all approach our next rescue duty with confidence and renewed enthusiasm for plucking wet sailors out of the water.
CCSC Safety Boat guide includes up to date (at the time of writing) information on how to carry out a Rescue Boat duty.
Power Boat Refresher Training sets out the details of the training packages that we
are offering. In summary the sessions are tailored for 3 different requirements.
The schedule runs regularly throughout the season enabling you to time your
reminder for just before your duty. SB1 is remote, SB2 and 3 are
hands-on.
SB1 - For competent crews/ safety boat drivers who are new to CCSC or would like a reminder, we are offering a basic ‘Zoom’ discussion (occasional Thursday evenings) on CCSC rescue duty procedures including finding kit and where to land a casualty (with Q&A).
Practical sessions are aimed at practicing your skills:
SB2 - Occasional Tuesday evenings; includes SB1 + practicing Rib handling skills (on the water)
SB3 - Occasional Saturday afternoons during S4ALL; covers the above and introduces / refreshes Safety Boat skills such as capsize assistance, MOB recovery and towing.
Details of these sessions and how to ‘book’ yourself on one of the courses are included in the attached document.
Please do take advantage of this opportunity; these very frequent offerings are for this season only and are because of the unprecedented situation we have had to endure, so let’s crack on and keep our sailing events fully supported with some of the finest volunteer rescue teams in the business!
